Plans change. In game development, they sometimes loop all the way back to where they started.
Embark Studios, the Stockholm-based developer founded by industry veterans, has announced a major course correction for its upcoming shooter, Arc Raiders. The game is getting a dedicated cooperative PvE (Player vs. Environment) mode. This decision directly addresses a vocal group of players who felt abandoned when the studio shifted the gameโs core design a few years ago.
Originally revealed in 2021 as a free-to-play cooperative action game, Arc Raiders immediately caught the eye of sci-fi fans. The premise was simple but thrilling: team up with friends to fight off waves of terrifying, giant killer machines descending from space. But in 2023, Embark threw a wrench in those expectations. They announced the game was pivoting. It was no longer a pure PvE experience. Instead, it had morphed into a PvPvE extraction shooter. To make matters more complicated, the studio later shifted the game from free-to-play to a $40 premium release.
While some players embraced the extraction shooter trend, many original fans felt betrayed. They did not want to sweat against other players in high-stakes tactical gunfights. They just wanted to blow up giant robots with their friends. Now, Embark is offering a truce.
The Return of Co-Op Operations
In the upcoming seasonal update, players will finally get their hands on โOperationsโโa dedicated PvE mode completely stripped of hostile players.

In this mode, squads of three Raiders will drop into the ruined, rusty regions of Earth. The mission is straightforward: scavenge for vital resources, complete narrative objectives, and survive the relentless mechanical onslaught of the ARC threat. There are no rival players waiting in the shadows to steal your hard-earned loot. Your only enemies are made of chrome, steel, and lethal AI programming.
This is a massive win for players who found the PvPvE loop too stressful. Extraction games are notoriously punishing. Losing hours of progress to a sniper hiding near an extraction point is enough to make anyone close the game. By offering a separate PvE space, Embark is opening the door to a much broader audience.
How Progression Will Work
Crucially, progression will carry over between the two modes. Gear gathered during PvE Operations can be used to upgrade your Raiderโs skill tree, unlock new weapons, and customize your loadout. That same gear can then be taken into the high-stakes PvPvE zones if you ever feel brave enough to test your mettle against other humans.
This unified progression system prevents the game from feeling fractured. PvE is not just a tacked-on afterthought; it is a fully integrated part of the Arc Raiders experience. Players can choose their comfort level on any given night. If you want a relaxed evening of shooting drones and chatting with friends, you play Operations. If you want a heart-pounding, sweaty survival run, you drop into the PvPvE wastes.
Listening to the Community
โWe never stopped listening,โ said Aleksander Grรธndal, Executive Producer on Arc Raiders. โWhen we made the shift to PvPvE, we did it because we saw incredible potential for high-tension, unpredictable moments. But we also saw the passion of our community. People fell in love with the original vision of fighting the ARC together. We realized we did not have to choose one over the other. We could build both.โ

The timing of this announcement is highly strategic. The cooperative shooter market is currently booming. Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios proved there is an insatiable appetite for cooperative PvE experiences with Helldivers 2. Millions of players flocked to that game specifically because they wanted a fun, chaotic PvE playground without the toxicity and stress of competitive matchmaking.
Embark Studios likely looked at those numbers and realized they were sitting on a goldmine. The assets, the gunplay, and the enemies for a stellar PvE game were already built. Restricting Arc Raiders to the crowded and highly competitive PvPvE marketโwhere it would have to compete directly with games like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdownโlooked increasingly risky.
A Cinematic Fight for Survival
Visually, Arc Raiders stands out. Embark uses highly advanced photogrammetry and physics-based rendering. The destroyed earth feels tactile, dusty, and heavy. Watching a towering, multi-legged mechanical harvester crash through a concrete wall is a visual spectacle. Experiencing those cinematic moments with friends, without the sudden disruption of a camper ruining the vibe, is exactly what early trailers promised.
The feedback from early closed tests also played a massive role in this pivot-back. While testers praised the gunplay and the weight of the movement, many noted that the PvP elements felt jarring when mixed with the grand scale of the robot fights. It was hard to focus on a giant, screen-filling boss when you had to constantly look over your shoulder for an enemy sniper.
The lore of Arc Raiders sets a perfect backdrop for this kind of cooperative play:
- Earth has been devastated by a mysterious mechanical threat known as ARC.
- Humans have been forced underground, living in a subterranean sanctuary called Speranza.
- Raiders are the brave souls who surface to scavenge for supplies.
- The PvE mode creates a powerful โus against the worldโ mentality.
Embark has also confirmed that the PvE mode will support solo play. While designed for three-player squads, solo Raiders can challenge the ARC alone if they want an extra layer of difficulty. Matchmaking will be available to help solo players find teammates quickly.
With the new update, Embark is trying to satisfy both audiences. It is a bold move, but one that could pay off handsomely if they get the balance right. The dedicated PvE mode is scheduled to launch alongside the gameโs next major seasonal beta test, with a full release planned for next year.
