A Long-Awaited Homecoming
Destiny 2 players, grab your Sparrows. One of the game’s most beloved raids is finally coming back.
Bungie dropped a massive surprise in its latest developer update. The ‘Scourge of the Past‘ raid is officially leaving the Destiny Content Vault in the next major update. Along with it comes the highly coveted suite of Black Armory weapons, fully modernized for today’s sandbox.
For years, players have pleaded with Bungie to open up the vault. When the studio shelved multiple campaigns, destinations, and raids in 2020 to streamline the gameโs engine, it left a massive void. While older raids from the original Destiny have regularly made comebacks, fans have desperately missed the unique Destiny 2 experiences. Scourge of the Past has always been at the top of that wish list.
The Thrill of the Last City
What made Scourge of the Past so special? Unlike most raids that take place in grim alien fortresses or deep subterranean caverns, Scourge dropped players directly into the overgrown, war-torn streets of the Last City. It felt grounded. The environment felt incredibly close to home, contrasting the high-concept science fiction of other locations. The encounter design was fast, kinetic, and deeply cooperative.

And then, of course, there was the Sparrow section. It is easily one of the most memorable sequences in Destiny history. Escaping a colossal, glowing red Servitor while weaving through collapsing tunnels and tight alleyways on a rocket-powered bike was pure, unfiltered chaos. It was as much of a friendship-test as it was a raid encounter. The final boss, Insurrection Prime, was equally spectacularโa towering Fallen war mech that forced teams to coordinate map-reading, shield phase alignment, and precise timing. It was a masterclass in raid design.
Rebuilding the Forge: Black Armory Weapons Return
But letโs be honest. A raid is only as good as the rewards you get for beating it. On that front, Scourge was legendary.
The Black Armory aestheticโsleek, industrial, with distinct forge families like Meyrin, Rasmussen, and Satouโremains a fan favorite. Bungie confirmed that the entire original weapon set is returning. That means you will once again be hunting for these iconic classics:
- Threat Level (Kinetic Shotgun)
- No Feelings (Precision Scout Rifle)
- Tempered Dynamo (Fusion Rifle)
- Bellowing Giant (Rocket Launcher)
This isn’t just a simple copy-paste job, though. Bungie is giving these weapons a complete modern glow-up. They will be fully craftable at the Enclave, meaning you can finally guarantee your perfect god-roll. They are also getting a brand-new, yet-to-be-revealed Origin Trait themed around the Black Armory’s forge technology. Classic perks will be updated, and some pool adjustments will ensure these weapons can compete with current heavy hitters.

Then there is Anarchy. The Exotic heavy grenade launcher was once the absolute king of damage-over-time strategies. While players can currently buy it from the Tower’s Exotic archive, Bungie is returning the weapon to its rightful place. It will once again drop from the raidโs final encounter, featuring modern bad-luck protection so you don’t have to run the raid eighty times just to see it drop.
Tuning the Sandbox for Modern Power
A lot has changed since 2018. Back when Scourge first launched, we didn’t have Subclasses 3.0, Stasis, Strand, or Prismatic abilities. We didn’t have grappling hooks, infinite primary ammo, or the absurd healing builds of today. If Bungie re-released the raid without any tweaks, modern Guardians would tear through Insurrection Prime in seconds.
To keep things interesting, the developers are rebalancing the entire experience. While the mechanics and map layout will remain identical, boss health pools are getting a massive bump. Enemy density is also being cranked up to match our current crowd-control capabilities. For the ultimate challenge, a Master difficulty tier is being introduced. This harder mode will feature champions, tight modifiers, and Adept versions of the Black Armory weapons for those who manage to conquer it.
When Can Guardians Jump In?
The update is scheduled to drop alongside the launch of the next major Episode. Bungie promises a deeper look, including a live gameplay stream, as we get closer to the launch date. Whether you are a veteran looking to reclaim your favorite shotty or a newer player who has never stepped foot in the ruins of the Last City, this return is shaping up to be one of the most exciting updates in recent memory. Get your fireteams ready.
