The guests sipped prosecco andย chattered away while dessert was served at the third annual Project Health Minds Gala on Thursday.ย ย
The evening wasย winding down, but there was still one big award to give out: Humanitarian of the Year, which this year would be honoring Prince Harry andย Meghan, theย Dukeย and Duchess of Sussex,ย forย creating The Parents Network through their nonprofitย Archewellย Foundation. The Parents Network supports families who have been harmed by socialย media.ย ย
Earlier this year,ย itย hosted an event where the faces of young children were shown on giant smartphone screens; the childrenย had lost their lives in waysย their parents believe social media contributed to.ย ย
Thursdayโs Gala was hosted byย the nonprofit Project Healthy Minds, which provides free access to mental health services, especially focusing on young people who are struggling in a world dominated by technology.ย The event, and the conference the following day, gave a look into how young people and their parents are seeing social media, and revealed how grave the impact these platforms have had on mental health.ย ย
โLet me share a number with you,โย Prince Harry said asย he and his wifeย took the stage toย acceptย the award.ย โFour thousand.ย Thatโsย how many families the Social Media Victims Law Center is currently representing.โย ย

That number onlyย representsย the parents who have been able to link their childโs harm to social media and who have the capacity to โfight back against some of the wealthiest, most powerful corporations in the world,โ he said.ย ย
โWe have witnessed the explosion of unregulated artificial intelligence,ย heard more and more stories from heartbroken families, and watched parents all over the world become increasingly concerned about their childrenโs digital lives,โ Prince Harry continued.ย ย

He said these families were up against corporations and lobbyists that were spending millions to suppress the truth; that algorithms were designed to โmaximize data collection at anyย cost,โ andย saidย that social media was preying upon children.ย ย
Then, he called out Apple for its userย privacyย violationsย andย Meta for sayingย privacyย restrictionsย wouldย cost them billions. He spoke about the harms of AI and what happened when researchers, posing as children,ย tested outย an increasingly popular AI chatbot.ย โThey experiencedย a harmful interaction every five minutes,โ he said.ย ย
โThis wasnโt content created by a third party,โ he continued. โThese were the companyโs own chatbots working to advance their own depraved internal policies.โ
The big announcement of the night was that The Parents Network would partner withย ParentsTogether, another organization focused on family advocacy and onlineย safety, to do more work protecting children from social media.ย ย
This is not the first time Prince Harry, in particular, has spoken out about social media harms.ย Back in April, the princeย visited youth leaders in Brooklynย to talk to them about the risingย influence of tech platforms, which have been incentivized by profit rather than safety. In January,ย heย and Meghan alsoย called out Metaย for undermining free speechย after the platform announced it would make changes to its fact-checking policy.ย ย
Their thoughts about the influence of tech companies do not exist in isolation.
Numerous studies have shown the negative impact social media is having on young people, creating a mental healthย crisisย and fueling a loneliness epidemic.ย The next day, on Friday, World Mental Health Day, Project Healthy Minds threw a festival talk about mental health. For a few of those panels, Project Health Minds teamed up with Prince Harry and Meghanโs Archewell Foundation to hold discussions with parents, advocates, and experts about how social media has rewritten and rewritten childhood.
Following the Gala was a festival about Mental Healthย ย
The first panel was simply called โHow Are Young People Doing in the Digital Age,โย was introduced by Harry.ย ย
One panelist, Katie, spoke about how when she was just 12 years old, TikTok wouldย fillย her For You page with videos about dieting and losing weight;ย Katieย ultimatelyย developed anย eating disorder.ย ย
Another panelistย was Isabel Sunderland, the policy lead for the organization Design Itย Forย Us, which pushes forย saferย social media.ย ย
She recalls one day coming across an article about the Myanmar genocide, to which Metaโs platform, Facebook, was later accused of contributing.ย Theย article led her down a rabbit hole as she sought to understand how the platforms she uses every dayย could be used as tools thatย foment โhate and violence.โ She always thought it was her fault that sheย encounteredย contentย regardingย harmfulย topics like eating disorders.ย ย
โWhat I came to find through this research is that in fact,ย itโsย designed by social media companies to increase addiction and time spent on their platforms,โ she said.ย ย

The next panel, focused on childhood, spoke further about theย harmย social media is causing children. It was introduced by Meghan and moderated by journalistย Katie Couric.ย
It began with Jonathan Haidt, the author of the best-selling bookย andย controversialย book,ย The Anxious Generation, presenting his findings.ย
Anxiety is up. Depression is up. Children are struggling in school.ย Moreย children find their livesย to beย meaningless.ย There is no more outsideย playtime.ย Theyย arenโtย learning social cues because theyย arenโtย going outside. Boys are being led down the path to gambling addictions.ย Young peopleย donโtย know how to handle conflict in real life because theyย arenโtย spending time in real life โ only online.ย ย
And while states are trying to passย legislation,ย itย hasnโtย been without a fight โย the tech lobbyโs are working hard.ย ย
โPlay is about brain development,โ Haidt told Couric on the panel. โWhen animals are deprived of play in early childhood, they come out much more anxious in adulthood.โย ย
There is even a lessening of proper boredomย timeย โ those moments one spends looking out the window during a car ride or staring aimlessly ahead while waiting in a queue. Those moments gave the brain time toย restย and have now been replaced by scrolling on tablets and smartphones.ย ย
Amy Neville, the community manager of The Parentsโ Network and President of the Alexander Neville Foundation,ย joined the panel.ย She lost her son, Alexander, to an overdose, and isย suingย Snapchat for providing drugย dealersย accessย to her son.ย ย

โI quickly realized that families all over the United States were waking up, finding their kids dead in their bedrooms from pills purchased off of Snapchat,โ she said.ย Her lawsuit is moving forward. โI feel likeย itโsย a fight to the death,โ she said. โIโm willing to go there.โย ย
Another mother,ย Kirsten, took the stage. She is the mother of the young girl Katie, who sat on theย previousย panel. She spoke about how she thought she was doing everything right โ checking her daughterโs phone each night and putting it away before she went to sleep. Katie still ended up in the hospital, though, with an eating disorder.ย ย
Kirsten went through text messages andย searchย history.ย Someone then sent her an article about how TikTok is showingย youngย girlsโย eating disorder content.ย ย
โMy husband andย I, weย didnโtย know about the Forย Youย page,โ she said. โThis was not content that my daughter was seeking, but rather content that was coming to her on repeat.โย ย
The consensus of that panel โ as with both events โ was more action.ย ย
Throughout the event,ย people called for more legislative action, more accountability from tech platforms,ย more speaking,ย andย more people banding togetherย toย putย boundaries between them and social media.ย Though harm is said to fill the presence, hopeย remainsย aroundย the corner.ย ย
โWe can and we will build the movement thatย allย familiesย and all children deserve,โ Meghan said atย the Gala. โWe know that when parents come together, when communities unite, waves are made.ย Weโveย seen it happen, andย weโreย watching it grow.โย ย
