Microsoft has cut off the Israelย Ministry of Defenseโs access to some ofย its techย and services after anย internalย investigation found theย organizationย appeared toย be using itsย tech toย storeย surveillance data onย phone calls made by Palestinians.ย ย
The tech giant announced on Thursday that itย made the decision to โcease and disableโย certain subscriptions from the Israeli military. This affects subscriptions toย Azure cloud storageย and certain AI services.ย ย
โWe do not provide technology toย facilitateย mass surveillance of civilians, Microsoft Vice Chair andย Presidentย Brad Smith wrote in aย blog post. โWe have applied this principle in every country around the world, and we have insisted on it repeatedly for more than two decades. This is why we explained publicly on August 15 that Microsoftโs standard terms of service prohibit the use of our technology for mass surveillance of civilians.โ
Microsoft informed Israel of its decision last week, according toย The Guardian.ย ย
The decision follows Microsoftโsย ongoingย reviewย of the matter,ย which started in August. The investigationย was sparked by a story inย The Guardianย that reported that Unit 8200, the elite Israel military intelligence unit, wasย using Azure cloud storage toย houseย data on phone callsย obtained through the surveillance ofย Palestiniansย in Gaza and the West Bank.ย ย
In his blog post, Smith also said the company appreciated The Guardianโsย initialย reporting. Smith wrote that without it, theyย wouldnโtย have known toย look intoย the matter, asย due to customer privacyย rights,ย theyย canโtย access a customerโs content.ย
โAs employees, we all have a shared interest in privacy protection, given the business value it creates by ensuring our customers can rely on our services with rock solid trust,โย Smith wrote.ย ย
