How You Talk About Your Body Matters In Friendships

I was put to the test amongst a new set of friends recently. They were chatting about what they would change if they had the money for cosmetic enhancements. It was the expected conversational dance; โ€œI need a boob jobโ€ met the response โ€œIโ€™d get a tummy tuckโ€, and so on. Except, as eyes turned to me, ready for me to share the flaw I was keen to fix, I couldnโ€™t think of anything. In that moment, I was alright with myself. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t change anything,โ€ I said, shrugging. I quickly got the sense that this response was wrong. (If youโ€™re thinking of that Mean Girls scene โ€” youโ€™re spot on; the one where Regina George and co stand in front of a mirror picking apart their skin, hair and nails, and Lindsey Lohanโ€™s character, Cady, feeling the pressure to participate, says, โ€œI get bad breath in the morningโ€).
