Building venture-backable companies in heavily regulated spaces

Building inย regulated industriesย addsย aย massive hurdle to theย already challengingย journey of building a startup. And this week on Build Mode, Startup Battlefield editor Isabelle Johannessen spoke to two foundersย who are working to makeย progressย ย in industriesย ripe for disruption,ย despite the regulatory headaches that mightย haveย deterredย many other people.ย ย

In this episode,ย weโ€™reย talking about life and death and how regulatory clearanceย doesnโ€™tย have to be a damper onย innovationย but it willย elongateย timelines and require careful planning from the jump.ย ย

Isabelle is first joined by Gabriel Sanchez, the CEO and co-founder ofย Enspectraย Health.ย The company hasย built a device that aims to do away with the need for dermatologist skin biopsies. Sanchez breaks down his decade-long journey toย receivingย FDA clearance. Throughout the interview, Sanchez offersย tactical advice to anyoneย in the midst ofย a long regulatory process and explains howย heโ€™sย kept his company afloat and his team motivated despite the uncertainties.ย ย

Next, Isabelle speaks with Tom Harries, the co-founder ofย Earth Funeral,ย anย end-of-lifeย startup that has developed a new process that transforms human remains into soil. Harriesย didnโ€™tย have to lead his team through aย long FDAย approval processย (because the FDA is primarily concerned with the living), butย his company has faced itsย own legislative challenges. Earth Funeral launchedย at a time when its alternative process was only legal in one state. And though its path to expansionย doesnโ€™tย hinge on accreditation or approval from a government agency, it does depend on legislative bodies and voters who may be discomforted by a new way to lay a loved one to rest.ย

New episodes of Build Mode drop every Thursday.ย Subscribe to the podcastย or watch onย YouTube. Isabelle Johannessen is our host. Build Mode is produced and edited by Maggie Nye. Audience Development is led by Morgan Little. And a special thanks to the Foundry and Cheddar video teams.ย
