Kathmandu, August 26, 2026: Nepal is facing a devastating flash-flood disaster along its northern border with Tibet, with the death toll reportedly rising to at least 55 people and hundreds of travelers and tourists still missing.
The disaster struck Nepalโs mountainous Rasuwa district on Wednesday after a sudden surge of water swept through the Bhotekoshi River system near the Nepal-China border. Villages, roads, bridges, vehicles and hydropower infrastructure were severely damaged as torrents of water, mud and debris rushed downstream.
According to the latest reports, 384 travelers have been listed as missing or out of contact, including hundreds of foreign nationals. The Nepal Tourism Boardโs preliminary information includes 291 foreign travelers and 93 Nepali citizens. At least 105 Indian nationals are among those reported missing.
Flash Flood Devastates Nepalโs Tibet Border Region
The worst-hit areas include Timure and Syapru Besi in Rasuwa, close to the border crossing with Tibet. The powerful floodwaters reportedly swept away homes and other structures while damaging major transportation links.
The flooding also affected the Gyirong border area on the Chinese side, where mudslides and floodwaters disrupted roads and other infrastructure.
Authorities have warned residents living near the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers to move to safer locations as the threat of further flooding remains.
Hundreds of Tourists Missing
The large number of missing travelers has become one of the biggest concerns for rescue authorities.
Many of those affected were traveling through the region toward Tibet and Mount Kailash, a major pilgrimage destination. The preliminary missing-person list includes travelers from India, the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia and several other countries.

What Caused the Sudden Flood?

Early reports suggest that an ice-and-rock avalanche may have blocked a river before releasing a huge surge of water downstream. Nepalese officials have also reported preliminary information about an earthquake in the area shortly before the disaster, raising the possibility that seismic activity may have contributed to the avalanche.
Experts have pointed to the vulnerability of the Himalayan region, where steep terrain, heavy monsoon rainfall, unstable slopes and rapidly changing glacier conditions can combine to produce sudden and extremely destructive floods.
Rescue Operations Underway
Nepal has launched a major search-and-rescue operation involving the army, police and other emergency teams. Helicopters have been deployed to reach areas cut off by damaged roads and bridges.
However, rescue operations are being complicated by heavy debris, destroyed infrastructure and difficult mountainous terrain. Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of another sudden surge if water remains blocked upstream.
China has also mobilized rescue personnel in the affected border region, while both India and China have offered assistance to Nepal.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed support for Nepalโs rescue and relief efforts, while Chinese authorities have ordered extensive emergency measures in affected areas.
Death Toll Could Rise
Officials fear that the death toll could increase as rescue teams gain access to areas that remain isolated by floodwater and debris.
The situation is changing rapidly, and casualty figures have varied between reports as authorities continue identifying victims and missing people. Earlier reports put the confirmed death toll much lower, but later updates have indicated a substantially higher number of deaths.
