Creator Tayla Cannon recieves $1.1 million investment from Slow Ventures’ creator fund to build PT software

In 2023,ย Taylaย Cannon moved from Australia to the U.S. for a job in a cityย sheโ€™dย never seen before.ย ย

โ€œNo family, no friends, just a fresh start,โ€ sheย toldย TechCrunch.ย A sufferer of chronicย back pain,ย  sheย first started working inย physiotherapy, thinking it was helping make a difference in the lives of others. Yetย the traditionalย physiotherapyย modelย never quite lit a spark in her.ย ย

She moved toย interventionalย cardiologyย butย only became more disillusioned
withย theย physicalย rehabย modelย withย โ€œits localized, reactive, and volume-based nature,โ€ she said.ย ย

Meanwhile, in her spare time, she became a content creator, sharing her perspective online about โ€œproactiveโ€ and โ€œholisticโ€ ways people can get rid of pain.ย ย

Thatย took on a life of its own.ย

She now has more thanย 130,000 followers on Instagram, aย company called Athletic Rebuild,ย which provides rehab and performance coaching for athletes, andย now,ย aย platform calledย Rebuildr,ย a HIPAA-compliant and mentorship app to help rehab professionals run their own businesses online, set to launch early next year.ย ย

โ€œI wasnโ€™t trying to build a business; I was just putting my brain on the internet and helping people rethink what care could look like.โ€ย ย

Cannonย and herย worksย caught the eye of Slow Ventures, whichย announced on Tuesday that itย investedย $1.1 millionย as a seed round.ย ย She is one ofย the first creators to receive a checkย from Slow Venturesโ€™ย $60 millionย Creator Fund, which seeks to back content creators and influencers makingย an impactย online.ย ย

Cannon said she had noย planย when she started sharing her thoughts on socialย mediaย inย 2024ย and thenย decided toย makeย this herย profession.ย โ€œThere was no strategy, no roadmap, andย certaintyย no business model behind it,โ€ she said. She credits what most content creators do for her success โ€”ย remainingย authentic andย sharing unfiltered but genuine thoughts.ย ย

Expanding a brand on social media is not without challenges, however.ย Her social media presence, and therefore brand, was growing fast,ย which was good butย alsoย aย problem. She wasย instantlyย faced with the need to understand business logic, consumer acumen, and content strategyย to connect with new audiences. โ€œNone of whichย areย taught in healthcare,โ€ she continued. โ€œWeโ€™re trained to help people, not to buildย brands.โ€ย

The turning point came when she actually realized she was the bottleneck to her own business.ย โ€œIย couldnโ€™tย keep scaling something that depended solely on me. I had to build something that could grow without me,โ€ she said, adding that she ended up hiring people to helpย her with her projects.ย ย

She alsoย grewย herย strategyย whenย she moved fromย just talkingย aboutย whatโ€™sย brokenย in the world of rehabย andย started working onย solutions to help fix it.ย Rebuildrย isย intended to beย aย โ€œcomplete shift from localized reactive care to a proactive, holistic mode,โ€ย Cannon said, โ€œcombining consumer solutions, clinicians, education, and the software to deliver it all at scale.โ€ย ย

She was introduced to the team at Slow Ventures through a friend who invited her to one of the firmโ€™s events in Austin. โ€œI had zero intention of raising capital,โ€ she said. โ€œIย wasnโ€™tย even pitching. Iย wasnโ€™tย even preparing a deck.โ€ย  Still, she connected with Meganย Lightcap, an investor at Slow, and told her about what she was building withย Rebuildr.ย ย

โ€œThe conversation sparked something,โ€ Cannon said, adding that Slow has helped her โ€œimagineย a version of Rebuilder thatโ€™s even biggerโ€ย than whatย sheย envisioned.ย ย

Othersย personal trainer software out thereย includeย TrainHeroic,ย Trainerize, andย Everfit. Rudder hopes that her product,ย Rebuildr, fundamentally reshapes the rehab industry.ย ย

โ€œI want to make high-quality rehab accessible anywhere in the world, not limitedย byย geography, insurance, or 30-minute appointments,โ€ she said.ย ย
