Amazon Shifts to Biodegradable Paper Gift Cards

Get New Gift Card Rewards

Amazon is making a quiet but massive change to your holiday shopping routine. By the end of this year, those familiar plastic gift cards hanging on checkout racks at your local grocery store, gas station, or pharmacy will be gone. In their place? Paper.

The e-commerce giant is transitioning its entire global physical gift card lineup to 100% recyclable, biodegradable paper alternatives. It is a sweepingly simple shift, but one that carries a heavy environmental weight. Every year, millions of plastic gift cards end up in landfills, where they take hundreds of years to break down. Amazon wants to stop contributing to that pile.

The phase-out has already begun in several major markets. By December, shoppers worldwide will only see the new paper versions on store shelves.

Ditching the PVC

Historically, most gift cardsโ€”including Amazon’sโ€”have been manufactured using polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC. It is a cheap, durable plastic, but it is notoriously difficult to recycle. Most municipal recycling programs simply refuse to accept it. Consequently, almost every gift card ever bought eventually finds its way into the trash.

Amazon’s new cards are different. They represent a significant leap forward in sustainable retail design, featuring several key environmental upgrades:

  • Made entirely from FSC-certified paper sourced from responsibly managed forests.
  • Printed using eco-friendly water-based and soy-based inks.
  • Fully recyclable directly in standard household paper bins.
  • Completely biodegradable, breaking down naturally without leaving microplastics.

This means you can toss them directly into your household recycling bin once you have redeemed the code. They will degrade naturally without leaving harmful microplastics behind if they do happen to wind up in a landfill.

“We are constantly looking for ways to reduce waste across our entire business,” an Amazon spokesperson said regarding the initiative. “Transitioning our physical gift cards to a fully recyclable paper format is a logical step that aligns with our broader sustainability goals.”

A Small Card with a Big Footprint

At first glance, a single plastic gift card seems harmless. It weighs just a few grams. But look at the scale. The global gift card market is massive. Industry estimates suggest that billions of these cards are printed globally each year. When you stack them up, they represent thousands of tons of virgin plastic.

By swapping plastic for paper, Amazon is cutting out a significant source of single-use plastic. Retail experts point out that as the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon’s decisions often ripple through the entire industry.

Other major brands have flirted with paper gift cards in the past. However, Amazonโ€™s global reach means this transition could finally push paper into the mainstream. If competitors want to keep up with changing consumer expectations around sustainability, they will likely have to follow suit.

Part of a Larger Climate Push

This move isn’t happening in a vacuum. It is part of Amazonโ€™s larger, highly publicized Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across all operations by 2040.

The company has faced intense scrutiny over its environmental footprint for years. Packaging waste, in particular, remains a major point of friction with environmental advocates. Amazon has responded with several initiatives, such as reducing the size of its cardboard shipping boxes, eliminating plastic mailers in favor of paper ones, and encouraging manufacturers to ship products in their original packaging.

The gift card overhaul is another piece of that puzzle. It is highly visible to the everyday shopper who might never see the inside of an Amazon fulfillment center.

What Consumers Can Expect

For shoppers, the change will be almost seamless. The new paper cards are designed to feel sturdy, mimicking the premium weight of plastic without the environmental guilt. They feature the same security coatings to protect the redemption codes until purchased.

Retailers are currently working through their existing stocks of plastic cards. Once those are gone, they will not be replenished.

So, next time you grab a last-minute gift for a friend, don’t be surprised if the card feels a little different. It is still the same balance, just a lot lighter on the planet.
